BETH NIELSEN CHAPMAN
C’est dans le milieu de la Folk Music que cette chanteuse d’origine Texane s’est d’abord fait un nom en tant qu’interprète puis, comme auteur-compositeur.
Refusant d’être définitivement classée dans la catégorie des chanteuses country, ses inspirations sont en effet diverses.
Si l’on devait définir son répertoire, on dirait qu’il oscille entre pop, folk et blues en grappillant de-ci de là des sonorités d’Afrique ou d’ailleurs.
Cet éclectisme, elle le doit en partie à son père dont la carrière militaire conduit cette famille de cinq enfants à déménager pas moins de 6 fois dans son enfance.
Dès l’âge de 11 ans, autodidacte, elle s’essaye à la pratique de la guitare et commence à chanter. Elle apprend également le piano.
Elle fait ses débuts dans de petits clubs d’Alabama, dans un groupe qui s’appellera d’abord Harvest, puis Harmony. Le répertoire est composé essentiellement de bon vieux standards du Rock’n Roll, mais Beth se démarque en chantant les airs de Joni Mitchell.
C’est alors que sa route croise celle d’un Beach Boy, Bruce Johnston qui l’encourage à tenter sa chance du côté de Nashville.
Sa carrière décolle en 1990 avec un album éponyme. Mais son tout premier opus sera en fait enregistré 10 ans plus tôt. « Hearing It First » passera complètement inaperçu à l’époque.
En 1993 sort l’album “You Hold the Key”.
Sur un plan plus personnel : En 1979, Beth trouve l’homme de sa vie en la personne de Ernest. Ils se marient 3 mois seulement après leur première rencontre et deux ans plus tard naît Ernest III. Pendant 7 ans, la famille vit à Mobile, en Alabama. Développant son talent pour la composition, elle écrit de nombreuses chansons pour Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, Alabama et Lorrie Morgan dont certaines se classeront dans le Top Ten.
En 1993, son mari tombe malade. On lui diagnostique une forme très rare de lymphome incurable. Il meurt en août 1994 et Beth tente d’apprivoiser sa douleur en écrivant des chansons.
En 1997, avec son album très autobiographique « Sand and water » Beth Nielsen Chapman émeut le grand public. Cet album déchirant est dédié à son mari et à leur fils unique. Il est comme un journal retraçant à l’encre indélébile les souvenirs des jours heureux et l’absence intolérable.
Paradoxalement, le premier single issu de cet opus sera le titre « Happy Girl », chanson qui donne bien plus envie de danser que de pleurer. Elton John surfera sur la vague émotionnelle en reprenant la mélancolique chanson « Sand and water » lors de son concert hommage à Lady Diana, après avoir déjà recyclé son « Candle in the Wind » qui, comme chaun sait, a été écrit pour Marylin Monroe à l'origine. En 2000, elle est à son tour atteinte d’un cancer du sein. Ses projets d’albums s’en trouvent chamboulés, mais c’est un hymne à la vie que cette battante veut offrir à son public après sa convalescence.
En 2002 sort l’album de la renaissance et de la paix retrouvée, « Deeper Still » qu’elle auto-produit. C’est une femme épanouie que l’on retrouve, chantant ici avec Bonnie Raitt, Vince Gill, John Hiatt, John Prine et Emmylou Harris. Que du beau monde !
Elle participe à des bandes originales de films tels que « Le Prince d’Egypte » et « Une bouteille à la mer ».
En 2004, elle a le projet mystique de réaliser plusieurs albums compilant des chants traditionnels religieux, chaque album représentant une religion.
« Hymn » est le premier de cette série, elle y chante presque exclusivement en latin.
En 2005, elle revient à un répertoire plus Pop, avec la collaboration de Michael McDonald et Emily Saliers des Indigos girls dans les choeurs.
Aujourd’hui, cette artiste accomplie peut se vanter d’avoir fait chanter quelques uns des plus grands noms de la Folk Music : Emmylou Harris, ce qui n’est pas rien ! Bonnie Raitt ! Willie Nelson et Neil Diamond, entre autres !
