CAROLE KING
De son véritable nom, Carole Klein est née le 9 février 1942 à Brooklyn. Une sacrée nana de 65 ans à qui l’on doit quelques fameux standards sans forcément savoir qu’elle en est l’auteur.
Qui n’a jamais fredonné « You make me feel like a natural woman » ?
Rendue célèbre par la « Queen of soul » Aretha Franklin, cette chanson fut écrite et chantée par Carole King. Il en est de même pour « Will you still love me tomorrow » interprétée par The Shirelles en 1961.
La fan des Beatles que je suis est obligée de mentionner que le titre « Chains » que l’on trouve sur l’album Please please me fut également écrit de sa plume.
Allez, ceux qui n’ont pas remonté le temps jusqu’aux années 60 se souviennent sans doute de Kylie Minogue chantant « The Locomotion » ! Oui, c’est bien Carole King qui a écrit ce tube repris en France par…Sylvie Vartan.
Ah, les sixties, période d’insouciance et de textes légers…pas pour longtemps !
En 1971 sort l’album Tarpestry. Avec 11 millions de disques vendus, l’auteur-compositeur-interprète est enfin reconnue et une chanson entre dans le cœur des fans : « You’ve got a friend » qui sera plus tard reprise par James Taylor, le groupe Wet Wet Wet, Barbra Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Jimmy Cliff, Ella Fitzgerald, Al Green, Mickael Jackson, Tom Jones, pour les plus connus ! Ce morceau sera également transformé en gospel song, mélangée avec « Precious Lord », chanté notamment par Aretha Franklin sous le double titre : « Precious Lord / You’ve got a friend ».
Les sujets abordés le plus souvent par cette grande parolière sont ceux qui nous touchent tous : l’amitié, l’amour, les relations humaines, l’éloignement, la confiance… Comment parler d’elle sans évoquer ses textes ? C’est tout simplement impossible.
“Up on the roof”, elle aussi reprise par James Taylor, son grand ami ( oserait-je dire, son alter-égo masculin?) raconte une rêverie sur un toit, une évasion par la pensée, le cœur dans les étoiles.
« You’ve got a Friend » est un merveilleux hymne à l’amitié. On déclare bien souvent sa flamme amoureuse en chanson, mais l’amitié reste un sentiment très pudique. On ne dit pas à l’ami qu’on l’aime et qu’on sera toujours là pour lui. Carole King l’a fait, ce qui rend ce texte unique et universel. Chacun s’y retrouve avec l’envie de déclamer ces mots à l’ami de toujours.

« So far away » raconte l’éloignement, le manque, la séparation, texte qui sera toujours d’actualité puisque nous sommes d’une génération qui se consomme et puis se jète.

Je pourrais vous raconter sa vie, mais l’essence de Carole King est dans ses textes, dans son tempérament de feu, dans sa joie de vivre manifeste, dans ses engagements politiques, dans sa façon d’être belle, naturelle et forte, a natural woman ! Physiquement, moralement, c’est une artiste radieuse, rayonnante, épanouie. Quelle importance qu’elle se soit mariée 3 fois ? Ce qui compte, ce sont ces albums à découvrir ou redécouvrir, Tarpestry étant le plus connu, une véritable perle, mais il y a aussi Music (1971), Rythme and seasons (1972), Wrap around joy (1974), qui constituent vraiment le meilleur de sa carrière d’après moi.
Après un break de quelques années, elle revient sur le devant de la scène avec l’album Love makes the world aux sonorités plus modernes, dans l’air vite démodé des années 90.
En 1993, elle sort Colors of dreams. Mais c’est en 1996 que la magie fait son grand retour avec l’album The Carnegie Hall Concert contenant de magnifiques reprises de ses anciens tubes. En guest star, son ami fidèle, James Taylor qui l’accompagne sur « you’ve got a friend » , un grand moment de concert, on envie ceux qui peuvent aujourd’hui dire « J’y étais ! » La première fois que j’ai mis ce Live dans ma platine, j’en ai eu les larmes aux yeux…Un retour très apprécié à des instruments vrais : un piano, une voix, et le reste n’est que fioriture.
Je ne peux que vous conseiller le DVD Carole King Live car c’est aussi une véritable bête de scène. Crinière ébouriffée, dynamisme, émotion, tout y est. Féminine et Rock’n Roll, douce et féline, éternellement enfantine, cette femme est unique, et je vous la recommande grandement !
