JAMES TAYLOR
Né le 12 mars 1948 à Boston, James est issu d’une famille de musiciens. Kate Taylor, sa sœur est également chanteuse, ainsi que leurs enfants respectifs.
Au début des années 60, la famille Taylor au complet débarque en Europe. A l’automne 65, James fait ce qu'on pourrait appeler une crise d’adolescence aggravée et passe volontairement 9 mois en Hôpital Psychiatrique. L’année suivante, il part pour New York où il monte le groupe Flying Machin, se laissant piéger par les paradis artificiels en tombant dans les drogues dures, notamment l’héroïne.
Pour décrire son style musical, autant demander à James lui même : « Je suis le produit d'un environnement musical aléatoire, ce qui - je suppose - fait de moi un artiste folk. Le Rock' n' roll vert ! »
Il puise sa musique dans le Gospel, le Blues, la Country, le Jazz, pour en faire une musique veloutée et sobre, techniquement irréprochable, et autobiographique. Sans fausse pudeur, James Taylor livre sa vie, son parcours, ses amours compliquées, ses erreurs de jeunesse. Et c’est probablement sa sincérité et son humilité qui va droit au cœur de ses fans. Loin de moi l’idée de tout vouloir mettre en rapport avec le groupe que j’idolâtre par dessus tout, mais c’est sous le label Apple que James Taylor signera son premier contrat, label créé par les Beatles, vous savez, cette célèbre petite pomme verte ! Il est dans l’histoire de la musique, le premier artiste découvert et signé par les Beatles ! Son producteur, Peter Asher n’est autre que le grand frère de la petite amie de l’époque de Paul Mc Cartney, Jane. Eh oui, le monde est petit !
Son premier album intitulé James Taylor, ne se vend pas très bien, et le chanteur part en cure de désintoxication l’année de sa sortie en 1968. Il fait son retour en 69 au Newport Folk Festival. Hélas, suite à un accident de moto, les deux mains brisées, il se voit dans l’incapacité de jouer pendant des mois.
Les années 70 s’annoncent plus prolifiques. James part pour la Californie, signe avec Warner Bros Records tout en gardant son manager. Sort l’album qui connaîtra un succès international, Sweet Baby James, qui reste aujourd’hui encore un grand classique à côté duquel il ne faut pas passer. 1971, c’est la consécration avec sa reprise de la célèbre chanson de Carole King « You’ve got a friend »-récompensée par un Grammy Award- sur l’album « Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon ». L’année suivante, nouvel album « One man dog » et nouvelle vie, James épouse la chanteuse Carly Simon. Si vous ne la connaissez pas encore, voilà encore une sublime voix, profonde et intense à découvrir ! Deux enfants, des tournées, des albums, un autre changement de maison de disque, et un divorce en 1983…la rançon de la gloire… Pendant toutes ces années, le chanteur fait quelques apparitions sur les albums de ses amis, Art Garfunkel, Carole King bien sûr, Joni Mitchell (ex petite amie), Neil Young, etc…Bref, ne soyez pas surpris d’entendre la voix de James Taylor dans les chœurs d’un album de musique Folk. 22 albums dont quelques Best-of, James Taylor est incontournable.
Son allure modeste, son sourire réservé font de lui un artiste attachant, un bon copain dont on apprécie la compagnie chaleureuse. Reste malgré les années qui passent, ce regard bleu pétillant d’éternelle jeunesse, cette vitalité sur scène, la délicieuse sérénité d’un chanteur de folk aux 40 disques d’or et de platine. Tout de même! Comme si toutes ces récompenses ne suffisaient pas, James Taylor chante sur la Bande Originale du dessin animé de Walt Disney « Cars » et rafle un Grammy ! Son fils Ben reprend le flambeau et se retrouve dans une compilation « Song for my father », CD où l’on découvre une certaine Louise Goffin chantant « Up on the roof ». Louise n'est autre que la fille de…Carole King ! La sœur de Ben, Sally ne déroge pas à la règle. Elle participera à un concert aux côtés de son frère.
Pour ce qui est de son actualité, James Taylor a démarré une tournée en Europe, mais hélas, la France n’est pas prévue au programme…
Tout comme Carole King, James Taylor s’est engagé à défendre John Kerry dans sa campagne présidentielle.
