RORY BLOCK
 Aurora (Rory) Block, naît le 6 novembre 1949 à Princetown et sa vie débute comme celle de la famille Ingalls (cf : « la petite maison dans la prairie » ou « Little House » pour les anglophones), dans une maison de bois sans confort au fin fond d’une forêt. Une vie de bohème avec des parents idéalistes. Son père tient une boutique de sandales à Greenwich village et compte un certain Bob Dylan parmi ses bons clients…Epoque bénie des cheveux longs, des sandales et des T-shirts Tie and Die, des peace and love en pendentifs… Cette fréquentation régulière des grands noms de la folk tels que John Sebastian pousse la petite fille à apprendre la guitare classique dès l’âge de 10 ans. Adolescente, elle se rend fréquemment dans le Bronx, assiste à des messes Gospel, s’inspire de toutes ces essences de Blues qui la touchent. Elle rencontre le Révérend Gary Davis qui sera son maître, son formateur. A 15 ans, elle quitte la maison et part sur les routes avec une bande de copains. Elle perfectionne son style, son jeu de slide guitare et son interprétation, se produisant parfois 250 fois en une année ! Dans les années 70, elle enregistre quelques albums qui passent quasiment inaperçus, non pas qu’ils soient mauvais, mais probablement parce qu’elle est une femme, blanche de surcroît, qui joue du blues traditionnel. Elle enregistrera également des méthodes de guitares. En 1981, lorsque sort son album High Heeled Blues, le magazine Rolling Stones en parlera comme le son Country Blues le plus étonnant qu’aucun musicien, homme ou femme, noir ou blanc, jeune ou vieux, n’ait jamais joué. Cette chanteuse de blues au timbre si particulier, à la voix forte, vibrante et puissante, a enregistré 15 albums en 40 ans de carrière. Connue aux Etats Unis pour être une pionnière dans le domaine très masculin du Blues, elle reprend les grands standards de ses maîtres, tels que Robert Johnson, mais aussi des Gospel songs, et collaborant avec Eric Bibbs, Bonnie Riatt, Mary Chapin Carpenter...La musique traditionnelle et ses dérivés forment une grande famille en Amérique où les noms apparaissent fréquemment sur les albums des uns et des autres, ou les rencontres live sont monnaie courantes.
En dehors des reprises, Rory Block écrit et compose ses propres chansons aux textes parfois militants. La chanson « God’s gift to women » est un véritable pamphlet féministe, un gros coup de gueule contre les machos qui croient être un cadeau, un don du ciel pour leur épouse quand ils ne sont que de fieffés menteurs, parfois violents. Mais agrémenté d'un petit air façon quatuor gospel made in Alabama, cette caricature anti-macho est un bonheur pour les oreilles. Pour revenir à la carrière de la chanteuse, ce n’est qu’avec le début des années 90 que son succès s’accroît de manière considérable, faisant d’elle une artiste de renommée mondiale. Le Blues est définitivement une musique du cœur et de l’âme.
