BONNIE RAITT
Le temps semble ne pas avoir de prise sur la flamboyante Bonnie Raitt. Cette Californienne, disciple de John Lee Hooker, chanteuse et guitariste de blues et de country est née le 8 novembre 1949. Elle est le fruit de l’union d’un grand chanteur de Broadway, John Raitt et Marge Goddard, pianiste et chanteuse confirmée.
Aujourd’hui, avec une carrière qui a certes connu des hauts et des bas, la chanteuse aux 9 Grammy Awards est une véritable légende aux Etats-Unis.
Elle n’a que 8 ans lorsqu’elle reçoit sa première guitare à Noël. Dans les années 60, elle fait ses études à Harvard. Seul un quart des étudiants sont des filles. On est loin de la parité, et cette inégalité fait vibrer sa corde révolutionnaire. Elle commence à s’intéresser de très près à toutes les injustices de ce monde : la guerre, la pauvreté, le droit des femmes, tout ce qui fait les sujets des chansons de l’époque qu’on appelait les « protest songs ».
Si Bonnie apprécie la musique folk, elle est parallèlement très attirée par le blues.
A sa troisième année d’université, elle abandonne ses études au profit de la musique. Elle se retrouve à chanter aux côtés des dinosaures du blues qui deviendront ses professeurs et amis: Muddy Water, Fred Mc Dowell, Sippie Wallace, Son House et John Lee Hooker ! Quelle école ! "I'm certain that it was an incredible gift for me to not only be friends with some of the greatest blues people who've ever lived, but to learn how they played, how they sang, how they lived their lives, ran their marriages, and talked to their kids," she says. "I was especially lucky as so many of them are no longer with us."
En 1971, elle signe avec Warner Bros son premier contrat et enregistre son premier album, éponyme, composé de reprises de standards de Robert Johnson entre autres, mais aussi de ses propres chansons.
Ensuite, les albums s’enchaînent rapidement, « Give it up », « Takin’my time », « Streetlights”, “Home Plate”, “Sweet Forgiveness” qui contient son tout premier tube “Runaway”.
En 1979, elle participe à un concert organisé par l’association anti-nucléaire MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) dont elle est co-fondatrice. Militante convaincue, elle participera ainsi à des centaines de concerts à but caritatif.
Elle collabore et fait de nombreux duos, notamment avec Bryan Adams sur « No Way to Treat a Lady », avec Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, Norah Jones, le très talentueux et trop méconnu Jackson Browne ( Il faudra que je vous le présente !), Steve Ray Vaughan, Billy Preston ( celui-là même qui joue du clavier sur l’album « Let it be » des Beatles et qui accompagna Eric Clapton dans sa précédente tournée!), Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, …ça fait rêver !
Dans les années 80, sa carrière connaît un passage à vide et sa maison de disques, peu scrupuleuse, la laisse tomber. Elle doit lutter seule contre ses propres démons : la drogue et l’alcool. La route sera longue et difficile jusqu’à son grand retour et sa consécration avec l’album « Nick of Time » en 1989. Belle revanche que cet opus qui lui rapportera une flopée de Grammy Awards et fera d’elle une véritable super star !
Son tout nouvel album « Souls Alike » qui est aussi le titre de sa tournée 2006-2007, est composé de chansons d’auteurs peu connus mais qui ont inspirée Bonnie Raitt. Entourée des musiciens qui l’accompagnent fidèlement depuis une dizaine d’années, les morceaux furent enregistrés en deux ou trois prises maximum, dans un soucis de spontanéité. Sa volonté étant de renouveler son répertoire, elle modernise son style en faisant appel à de jeunes talents, tout en gardant l’âme de ce qui fait le son Bonnie Raitt : une voix suave et légèrement éraillée, des riffs de blues inspirés de la Nouvelle Orléans, un soupçon de Rock’n Roll et toujours une grande sincérité et une grande générosité.
Des épreuves récentes telles que la maladie et le décès de ses parents, successivement, puis le combat de son frère contre le cancer, donnent à cet album une couleur plus personnelle à ces nouvelles chansons.
