JUDY COLLINS
Judith Marjorie Collins fêtera ses 68 ans le 1er mai, encore une jeunette dans ma liste des rois et reines de la musique folk !
Je l’ai découverte lors d’une foire aux disques, en furetant dans les nombreux cartons de vinyles. Par hasard, je suis tombée sur un 45 tours : « Amazing grace » avec en face B « Both Sides Now » de Joni Mitchell. A l’époque, je ne connaissais que la version de Paul Young ! J’ai élargi ma culture musicale depuis…
J’ai acheté sans connaître, parce que j’aimais son visage et son look, et cette chanson de Gospel qui m’est chère.
Il y a les rencontres humaines et les rencontres musicales. Ce fut un coup de cœur pour cette voix très pure qui me rappelait une autre de mes idoles : Joan Baez.
Son histoire :
Bien qu’elle ait eu une formation classique, c’est la musique folk qui l’attire très tôt avec des musiciens hors pairs tels que Peter Seeger (qui a décidément influencé bien du monde !) et Woody Guthrie (le père des protest singers des sixties).
1961 : son premier album A Maid of Constant Sorrow est constitué essentiellement de reprises de grands standards folk. Mais Judy est aussi une grande admiratrice de Jacques Brel dont elle adaptera plusieurs titres, ce qui est peu commun pour une chanteuse américaine, la musique française ayant toujours un peu de mal à passer les frontières…
Avec son album Wildflowers - plus peace and love comme titre, c’est impossible, mais nous sommes en 67 - elle remporte un Grammy Award pour sa très belle reprise de « Both Sides Now » qui contribuera à faire connaître Joni Mitchell au grand public. La magie de la musique…
En 1968, sort Who Knows Where the Time Goes, produit par un certain Stephen Stills des Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (et pour les français, 1er mari de Véronique Sanson).
D'ailleurs, pour la petite histoire, elle est la Judy de la chanson « Judy Blue Eyes » qui figure sur le premier album du fameux groupe. Il faut dire que les yeux de Judy méritaient bien une chanson !
Et comme j’adore les petites anecdotes, sachez que Leonard Cohen a écrit sa célèbre chanson Suzanne, au départ, pour Judy Collins !
Leonard Cohen s’explique dans son plus mauvais français :
« J’ai rencontré Judy Collins à New York un certain moment et j’ai joué quelques chansons pour elle et elle m’a dit qu’elle n’aime pas exactement … elle aime ce que je fais mais si j’ai quelque chose dans l’avenir… Quand j’ai terminé Suzanne je lui ai téléphoné de Montréal et je lui ai chanté cette chanson et elle a dit qu’elle veut l’enregistrer cette chanson et elle m’a aidé beaucoup. » Real Audio
Produite sous le label Elektra, le même que Carly Simon ou encore Joni Mitchell, Judy voit sa notoriété grandir tout au long des années 70. Elle est récompensé d’un autre Grammy Award pour sa chanson « Send in the clowns » tirée de la comédie musicale de Broadway « A Little Night Music ».
Dans les années 80, elle écrit ses mémoires et des nouvelles, tout en continuant sa carrière de chanteuse.
Comme beaucoup de chanteurs folk de sa génération, Judy est une artiste engagée, représentante de l’UNICEF. Elle lutte également dans la prévention contre le suicide depuis que son fils, Clark Taylor, a mis fin à ses jours.
Autre point commun avec Joan Baez, Judy Collins se fait plaisir en 1993 en sortant un album de reprises de Bob Dylan : « Judy Sings Dylan... Just Like A Woman”
Et Dylan chanté par ces dames, c’est quelque chose!
Plus récemment, elle sort un autre album de reprise d’une autre de ces idoles :
“Judy Collins Sings Leonard Cohen: Democracy”
Son dernier album date de 2005 et s’intitule:
“Portrait of an American Girl”
Entre temps, elle a enregistré des chansons enfantines et des chants de Noël. Elle a également chanté lors du gala d’investiture du Président Clinton.
Pour ce qui est des sorties DVD, la plus remarquée sera sans doute celle du « Wildflower Festival » en 2003.

Sur l’album de Dolly Parton "Those where the days", un joli duo sur « Both Sides Now » bien que je reproche à la pulpeuse Dolly de ne pas laisser assez de place à la voix de sa partenaire.
Sur le site web de Judy Collins, on trouve une page de liens vers les sites de ses chanteurs favoris. Bien sûr, il y a à peu près tous les artistes cités ci-dessus, mais…et je suis bien obligée de le mentionner…il y a aussi, au milieu de cette liste des légendes de la country, un certain…Paul Mc Cartney ! Elle reprendra d’ailleurs la chanson des Beatles « In my Life ».
