EMMYLOU HARRIS
Emmylou Harris, c’est un nom connu dans le monde entier, une trentaine d’albums et quelques récompenses bien méritées. C’est aussi une personnalité discrète, une féminité toute en simplicité et naturelle. A 60 ans, elle porte ses cheveux blancs avec fierté. Une voix claire et belle, sans fioriture, pure, à l’image de l’artiste intègre qu’est cette grande dame de la musique folk américaine.
Biographie :
C’est en Alabama que la chanteuse de country-rock voit le jour le 2 avril 1947.
En 1969, elle se marie et l’année suivante sort son tout premier album « Gliding Bird ».
Ses idoles portent les noms de Bob Dylan et Joan Baez. L’influence de cette dernière est d’ailleurs très palpable dans sa façon d’interpréter les morceaux.
En 1971, elle est repérée par Chris Hillman. Précieuse rencontre puisqu’il la présente à un certain Gram Parsons qui fera décoller sa carrière. Hélas, la collaboration sera de courte durée puisque Parsons sera retrouvé mort des suites d’une overdose en 1973.
En hommage, elle enregistrera plusieurs de ses chansons, notamment « She » et « « Luxury Liner ».
1975 est l’année de la sortie de son premier véritable album solo « Pieces of the Sky », petit bijou contenant entre autre, une très belle reprise des Beatles « For no one ». Elle poursuit sa carrière au Canada au côté de son second époux qui est également son producteur.
Elle monte son premier groupe, « The Hot Band » en recrutant d’anciens musiciens du King tels que Albert Lee, Rodney Crowell et Hank DeVito. Joli casting !
Les albums s’enchaînent et connaissent un certains succès, tant auprès des amateurs de country qu’auprès des amateurs de rock.
Le monde de la folk est une grande famille. Elle collabore avec Dolly Parton et Linda Ronstadt sur les albums « Trio » et « Trio II ». Très amie avec Neil Young, elle participe à l’album « Light of the Stable ».
Son rêve de fan se voit devenir réalité en chantant aux côtés de Bob Dylan sur « Desire » et « The Last Waltz ».
“Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town” qui sort en 78, est réputé pour être son meilleur album. En 1980, elle mêle sa voix à celle d’une autre légende, le grand Roy Orbison, sur « That Lovin’ You Feelin’Again ».
En 1985, elle écrit et compose l’album autobiographique « The Ballad of Sally Rose » , évoquant ses relations avec Chris Parsons.
En 1992, elle monte un nouveau groupe avec lequel elle repart sur les routes : The Nash Ramblers.
Elle continue sa route, travaillant avec Willie Nelson, et changeant de producteur pour confier cette fois sa carrière aux bons soins de Daniel Lanois.
En 2000, elle participe au premier album de Ryan Adams (à ne pas confondre avec Bryan… puis se lance dans une nouvelle aventure : accompagnée d’un nouveau groupe, elle interprète la bande originale du film « O Brother ».
En 2005, elle effectue une tournée aux côtés d’Elvis Costello et signe son grand retour en 2006 avec un album en duo avec Mark Knopfler.
Ses engagements :
Chaque année depuis 1999, Emmylou Harris organise un concert au profit des victimes de la guerres et des mines antipersonnel. Elle est soutenue par Mary Chapin Carpenter, Joan Baez, Patty Griffin, entre autres…
Fervente militante pour la défense des animaux, elle est également membre de l’association PETA.
