Je suis effectivement très proche de mon frère James, et aussi de mes autres frères, même si nous avons peu d’occasions de nous voir. Chacun est très pris par sa carrière et à sa vie de famille.
Nous étions très proches lorsque nous étions enfants, nous partagions beaucoup de choses, la musique, l’école. J’ai remarqué que dans certaines situations, quand on travaille en studio ou quand on répète, on est très sensible émotionnellement, et dans ces moments là , travailler en famille rend les choses encore plus intenses, mais ça aide aussi en un sens. J’ai adoré travailler avec James. Il donne sans compter de son temps, de son talent. Il est très consciencieux, il s’investi à fond jusqu’au produit final.
C’est lui qui m’a présenté à mon premier manager, Peter Asher, avec qui il travaillait à l’époque. Il nous a aidé à sortir mon premier album chez Cotillon Records en 1970 , à partir de la démo qui nous avions faite. Il a écrit “You Can Close Your Eyes”et me l’a envoyé pour que nous l’enregistrions en premier. Son soutien m’a été d’une grande aide, et j’espère un jour pouvoir lui rendre la pareille.
-Tu as fait une très longue pause dans ta carrière pour élever tes enfants. Mais 20 ans, c’est long! Avais-tu d’autres raisons de t’arrêter?
Elever mes filles a été ma priorité. Mon mari Charlie Witham et moi étions focalisés sur nos enfants et la vie de famille était pour nous une grande source de joie. Il n’était pas possible de faire des tournées, d’assumer les enregistrements et la promotion en même temps. Mais j’ai eu de très belles opportunités de chanter, j’ai écrit, j’ai fait un peu de scène pendant que les enfants grandissaient. Nous avons un fantastique groupe d’amis musiciens avec qui nous avons travaillé, nous faisions de la musique au ralenti pendant toute cette période où nous avons élevé nos enfants.
- Qu’as-tu fait pendant toutes ces années? J’ai lu que tu avais vécu dans un tipi. Tu peux nous raconter?
T’es-tu déjà trouvée à l’intérieur d’un tipi, avec un feu crépitant en son centre? C’est un lieu très confortable et très spirituel, et la première fois que j’ai mis les pieds dans un tipi, j’ai su qu’il fallait que je m’en construise un. Je me suis procurée un livre pour savoir comment faire, j’ai acheté de la toile et j’ai cousu à la main mon premier tipi. Nous sommes allés dans le Maine, nous avons déniché de grands mâts et un merveilleux endroit où nous nous sommes installés. Il n’y a rien de plus agréable que d’être étendu là, la tête près du feu, à regarder les étoiles scintiller par le trou central d’où s’achappe la fumée. C’est une superbe expérience, et ça te fait faire de merveilleux rêves.
-Tu as fait pas mal de reprises, de Carole King en passant par les Everly Brothers. Comment as-tu choisi ces titres?
Il y a tellement de fantastiques auteurs-compositeurs, c’est très amusant, et ça m’inspire de chanter leurs chansons. Il n’y a pas de meilleures chansons que celles écrites par Carole King. Choisir un morceau a quelque chose d’assez mystérieux, je ne saurais l’expliquer. Je pense qu’une chanson me plait à cause de ses paroles et de sa mélodie et de la façon dont tout ceci se mèle. Est-ce qu’elle est agréable à chanter? Est-ce qu’elle raconte une histoire que j’ai envie de raconter? Certaines chansons te parlent, tout simplement, ou devrais-je dire, te chantent?
-Il y a beaucoup de chanteurs dans cette famille. Est-ce que tes filles chantent aussi?
Oui! Nous chantons tous et je trouve très agréable de chanter avec ma famille. Les enfants de mon frère chantent et écrivent des chansons, et mes filles aussi. Ma fille Aretha est diplomée de l’école de musique de Berklee, elle a une license d’auteur-compositeur. Ma fille Elizabeth est une merveilleuse chanteuse, mais elle consacre davantage son énergie créatrice à la réalisation de films documentaires. On peut voir son travail en tapant “docutunes” sur YouTube. En ce moment, elle travaille sur un DVD de moi et mon groupe, avec de nouvelles chansons, et on me voit dans le tipi ! Tiens-toi au courant!
-Aujoud’hui, as-tu un producteur ou es-tu ton propre patron?
J’ai monté mon propre label, Front Door Records, avec lequel j’ai réalisé mes derniers albums. J’aime être intimement impliquée dans ce processus, j’aime savoir comment les choses se font. Je ne suis pas contre le fait de travailler avec d’autres personnes. Je suis très reconnaissnte de l’aide que m’apportent mon groupe et mes amis qui représentent mes intérêts professionnels dans certains cas. C’est toujours gratifiant d’avoir une bonne équipe avec qui travailler.
-Aimerais-tu chanter en dehors des Etats-Unis? Que penserais-tu d’une tournée de la famille Taylor en Europe?
J’adorerais faire une tournée en Europe. Jusqu’ici, toutes nos tentatives pour organiser une tournée en famille ont échoué. La raison principale est que chacun est très occupé à donner ses propres concerts, et il est très difficile de trouver une période où nous sommes tous disponibles.
J’ai travaillé avec mon frère Livingston. Le public s’est montré très chaleureux. C’est génial de faire de la musique ensemble et je pense que les gens aiment cette idée de chanter en famille. J’espére toujours qu’une tournée avec toute la famille se fasse un jour.
En attendant, je suis prête et disponible pour une éventuelle tournée en Europe!
-Qui sont tes chanteurs actuels préférés?
J’ai tellement de chanteurs préférés qu’il m’est difficile de savoir par qui commencer sur ma liste, j’ai peur d’en oublier. J’aime les anciens chanteurs de rythme and blues, Otis Redding, Sam Cook, Ike et Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Ruth Brown, Charles Brown, Ray Charles, Boby Blue Bland, Little Jimmy Scott. J’adore le gospel, The Dixie Himmingbirds, The Swan Silverstones, j’adore les auteurs-compositeurs suivants: James et Liv Taylor, Ben Taylor, Isaak Taylor, Aretha Witham.
Plus récemment, j’ai eu l’occasion d’écouter Willie Mason et Nina Violet, et j’adore ce qu’ils font. J’adore le Jazz et les comédies musicales de Broadway. J’adore Carole King et Joni Mitchell. J’adore Bob Dylan et Bruce Springsteen. J’adore Tom Petty and TheTraveling Wilburys. J’adore la country, le blue grass et le rockabilly. J’adore Elvis !
C’est une question difficile pour moi, car il y a tellement de styles musicaux et d’artistes que j’aime.
-Des regrets par rapport à tes choix de carrière?
Je n’ai aucun regret. Je me retourne sur ce voyage accompli et je vois que chacun des pas que j’ai fait ont ajouté à la qualité et à la profondeur de mon existence, et je n’aurais rien voulu manquer de tout ça. Ce que je souhaite, c’est être capable de tirer des leçons et d’assimiler la sagesse que peut m’apporter mon vécu, et l’utiliser pour mieux communiquer avec les gens qui m’entourent.
