Quelques questions à Stéphane Corbin : 
Miss Lucy -La chanson française, celle qu’on appelle « nouvelle scène » revient à des textes travaillés, ce sont souvent des petites chroniques du quotidien, comme on dit. Tu as 30 ans, tu es comme moi de la génération qui trouvait un peu ringard cette chanson française quand nous étions enfant. Aujourd’hui, des artistes oubliés tels que Nicolas Pérac, Hugues Aufray, Adamo ressortent des albums, et plaisent à la nouvelle génération. On ne les trouve plus du tout ringard, on porte un nouveau regard sur leurs chansons. Comment expliques-tu cela ? Stéphane Corbin : Le mot « ringard » ne fait pas vraiment partie de mon vocabulaire. La musique n’est une affaire ni de mode, ni d’âge, ni d’étiquette. Les artistes que tu évoques ont tous des démarches respectables, ils n’ont, je crois, jamais arrêté de travailler et de faire leur métier, et ils appartiennent à une histoire de la chanson française que je trouve important de s’approprier. Après, c’est vrai qu’à un moment de leur carrière, ils n’ont plus eu la même exposition médiatique, mais c’est quelque chose qui n’est pas vraiment rationnel, et qui, en tout cas, n’a rien à voir avec la musique et dont je ne me soucie guère. ML:Ton titre « Juste à temps » me fait vraiment penser aux chansons graves et autobiographiques que pouvaient chanter Dalida, Léo Ferré, Brel… Qui sont tes idoles ? Y a-t-il des auteurs compositeurs actuels qui t’inspirent ? SC:« Idole » est un terme trop fort, je n’ai pas d’idoles, mais du respect et de l’admiration pour certains artistes qui, par leur travail, leur démarche et leur personnalité, peuvent représenter des modèles. D’une manière générale, je me sens plus proche des songwriters anglo-saxons que des chanteurs français, à quelques exceptions près, comme William Sheller ou Francis Cabrel. Je me nourris de la musique d’artistes comme Kate Bush, Nick Cave, Natalie Merchant ou Tori Amos, et je me sens d’une famille plus proche de celle de Damien Rice ou de Lhasa que d’un Bénabar par exemple. ML: Les modes passent, tu le sais. Si demain, ce goût pour ce genre de chanson française s’estompe à nouveau, redevient « ringard », te remettras-tu en question ? Te mettras-tu au Rock’n Roll ? SC: Je ne m’interroge pas sur la mode, ça ne me concerne pas, je crois. Je fais la musique que je dois faire, celle qui est en moi. Tant mieux si, à un moment donné, ce qu’on est nous permet de rencontrer un large public. Il n’y a que l’authenticité qui m’intéresse. ML:Tu es en train de travailler sur ton 3ème album. Le premier était intitulé « seconde vie ». Pourquoi ce titre ? Tu étais bien jeune encore pour entamer une nouvelle vie, non ? SC: J’avais 23 ans quand cet album a été enregistré, après avoir vécu un événement très douloureux, j’avais la sensation de passer à une autre étape, comme une deuxième vie… ML: Ton deuxième album, celui dont sont tirés les titres en écoute sur ta page MySpace, s’intitule « Optimiste ». Serait-ce ta 3ème vie qui commence? Tu es parti t’installer à Paris et tenter ta chance, et ça a l’air de marcher pour toi. Qu’est-ce qui te rend optimiste ? SC: La chanson « Optimiste » est celle qui clôt l’album. Je trouvais ça amusant d’appeler l’album ainsi, parce que, de loin, c’est la chanson la plus noire de ce disque… Je suis à Paris depuis 4 ans et j’ai beaucoup joué, dans de nombreuses petites salles. J’apprends mon métier scène après scène, j’ai la chance de vivre de ce que j’aime, d’avoir pu aussi multiplier les projets artistiques ces dernières années. Je mesure combien c’est rare et précieux. Pour autant, je ne dirais pas encore que « ça marche » pour moi : c’est le début du parcours, mais j’ai déjà la chance d’avoir un public fidèle qui me suit de concert en concert, ça aide à se sentir optimiste. ML: Comment vas-tu appeler ton 3ème album ? Est-ce un secret ? SC: Je ne le sais pas encore, le travail sur le prochain album ne fait que débuter. ML: On accuse beaucoup les Vincent Delerm et autres chansonniers d’aujourd’hui de privilégier le texte au chant. Toi, visiblement, tu sais chanter ! As-tu pris des cours de chant ? Quelle est ta formation ? SC: J’ai pris des cours avec des professeurs de chant classique, ça m’a donné un support technique pour explorer des facettes de la voix que je ne maîtrisais pas seul. Mais j’ai aussi beaucoup travaillé en m’enregistrant et en me réécoutant. Je ne connais pas de meilleure école. Il n’y a pas plus dur et exigeant que soi-même. ML:Ta famille semble être très soudée. Est-ce dans cet esprit de clan que tu puises ta force et ton optimisme ? SC: C’est un atout, c’est sûr. Le fait que mon père et mon frère écrivent une partie de mes textes nous a réunis et donné un objectif commun. Et c’est très agréable de travailler avec ceux qui vous connaissent le mieux. Mais ça reste un projet individuel, celui d’une vie, pas celui d’un « clan ». ML: Quel rôle joue ton frère François dans ta carrière ? SC: Pendant un temps, il s’est occupé de ce qu’on appelle le « management », parce qu’il fallait bien que quelqu’un assume ce rôle. Aujourd'hui, j’ai un agent et François peut se consacrer entièrement à ce qu’il aime : écrire des textes. ML: Tu produits toi-même tes albums, je crois. Serais-tu prêt à faire des concessions pour être signé par un Label ? Lesquelles par exemple ? SC: L’autoproduction n’est pas vraiment un choix, me concernant en tout cas. C’était une nécessité à un moment donné, parce qu’il fallait avancer. J’ai consacré deux années de ma vie à l’album « Optimiste », à tout faire seul, dans des conditions pas toujours confortables, avec trop peu de matériel et des amis musiciens qui acceptaient de jouer le jeu. Je sais que travailler avec un label implique d’autres contraintes, mais je ne vois pas ça comme une perte de liberté. Je crois qu’on a toujours le choix, qu’il y a des « compromis » acceptables et certaines choses qu’il n’est même pas la peine d’évoquer. Il faut juste avoir les idées claires sur ce qu’on veut faire, et j’ai la chance d’être très bien entouré professionnellement aujourd’hui, par des gens qui comprennent ma musique et ne veulent pas la dénaturer. ML: Je suis de ceux qui apprécient ce souffle nouveau, ou ce retour à de véritables poètes chanteurs. Je te souhaite donc que ce 3ème album t’amène un peu plus près de ton rêve d’artiste.
