Tommy Ludgate - Interview
Miss Lucy: Peux-tu nous présenter ton groupe ? Comment les as-tu rencontrés ? Tommy Ludgate:Nous avons donc James Stelling à la guitare, Hamish Balfour au clavier, Tiernan Godel à la basse, et Ed Hopwood à la batterie. J’ai rencontré James et Ed à l’université d’où nous sommes fraichement diplômés. J’ai rencontré Tiernan et Hamish suite à une annonce sur gumtree.com. Tiernan a aussi étudié dans notre université, mais quelques années avant nous ! C’est étrange, la façon dont les choses sont arrivées, et j’adore jouer avec eux ! ML:Quand tu as signé ton premier contrat avec un label, tu n’étais qu’une adolescente. Qu’as-tu ressenti ? Comment est-ce arrivé ? TL:Je faisais partie d’un groupe de filles que nous avions formé, et j’avais 12 ans quand le Label indépendant Sharp End Records nous a fait signer un contrat. Nous avions été remarquées par un producteur qui était ami avec mon père, il nous avait fait enregistrer, et notre musique est, semble-t-il, tombée dans les bonnes oreilles. C’était une période très excitante, j’ai énormément appris : à travailler mon image, à chanter et à enregistrer. Qui plus est, nous avons eu la chance de voyager un peu partout en Europe, je me souviens m’être follement amusée. ML: Qu’as-tu fait ces dernières années après avoir travaillé avec Steve Mac ? Qu’est-ce qui t’a plu et moins plu dans le métier ? TL: Quand le groupe a cessé les enregistrements et les concerts, je suis tout naturellement retournée à l’école, puis à l’université où j’ai terminé les études. C’était une expérience géniale, surtout de travailler avec Steve Mac, c’est un producteur et compositeur très talentueux et très connu. Mais je reconnais que ça m’a fait du bien de faire un break, ça m’a permis de savoir ce que je voulais faire, écrire et composer à ma façon. Vraiment, j’adore le fait de chanter mes propres chansons avec mon groupe, je m’exprime comme je l’entends. ML: Sam Brown est une de tes sources d’inspiration, ça s’entend dans ta façon de chanter. Quelles sont les particularités de cette artiste qui te plaisent ? TL: J’adore la puissance vocale de Sam Brown, et il y a un petit truc que je pense lui avoir emprunté à force de l’écouter quand j’étais plus jeune, c’est ce petit souffle dans la voix qui donne une couleur particulière. Je pense qu’inconsciemment, je me suis aussi inspirée de sa façon d’écrire et de composer. Ça ne peut être qu’inconsciemment, car je serais bien incapable d’expliquer comment j’écris. L’inspiration vient comme par magie ! ML: Parle-moi des autres artistes qui t’inspirent. TL: Je suis passée par différentes périodes. Il y a les chanteurs que j’aimerai toujours, comme Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell, Liane Caroll, Amy Winehouse, Ben Harper, Susan Tedeshi. J’aime aussi beaucoup John Meyer, Alicia Keys au début de sa carrière, Lizz Wright, Stevie Wonder, Amos Lee. Plus généralement, j’adore le blues et ces chanteurs capables de donner énormément d’émotion et de puissance, comme s’ils venaient d’une autre époque. C’est aussi pour cela que j’adore aller voir les artistes en concert. J’aime aussi beaucoup le Jazz, c’est un style à la fois très enrichissant et impressionnant ! ML: Puisque tu chantais dans un chœur te gospel, te considères-tu comme quelqu’un de spirituel ? TL: Je pense que je suis quelqu’un de relativement spirituel, mais je pense que tout compositeur ou chanteur l’est un peu, puisqu’il s’agit de transcrire ce que l’on ressent au plus profond de soi. Mon écriture contient quelque chose de très spirituel, je pense, car elle vient à moi comme par magie, comme si un petit ange au dessus de ma tête, me l’insufflait. Ma grand-mère était très spirituelle, et je pense qu’elle m’a beaucoup influencée en ce sens. ML: Aimes-tu toujours la musique de Michael Jackson ? TL : Définitivement, oui ! C’est une légende ! Qui pourrait ne pas l’aimer ? ML: Ne crains-tu pas d’être cataloguée comme chanteuse de Jazz ? TL: Comme je l’ai dit tout à l’heure, le Jazz est un style qui ne m’effraie pas, mais ce genre est si vaste et si complexe ! ça ne m’effraie pas d’être considérée comme une chanteuse de Jazz, puisque ce genre m’influence beaucoup, mais je ne m’étiquetterais pas non plus strictement comme une chanteuse de Jazz, car je ne chante pas de grands standards et je sais que j’ai encore beaucoup à apprendre. ML: Actuellement, travailles-tu à un projet d’album ? TL: Je suis sur le point d’entrer en studio avec mon groupe pour réaliser mon tout premier album, suite à un concours que j’ai gagné sur un site internet : slicethepie.com, ce qui m'a facilité la vie. Je suis à la fois très excitée et nerveuse, car il n’y a ni manager, ni Label impliqué dans ce projet, je produis le tout moi-même. Je pense que c’est pour moi, une belle opportunité pour apprendre encore, j’espère juste que je n’aurai pas à tirer de leçon trop douloureuse, ou trop coûteuse ! ML: Tu as des dates de concert pour 2008 ? Au début de l’année, nous allons passer beaucoup de temps en studio, mais nous allons reprendre la route après l’enregistrement, vers l’est cette fois. J’espère faire quelques dates en Grande-Bretagne, et croisons les doigts pour le reste de l’Europe, si quelqu’un est intéressé ?
