Pascal, est-ce que tu permets que nous fassions d’abord un petit flashback en questions sur les années Pow woW ?
Oui, bien sûr, d’autant que les années Pow woW ont repris depuis 2005 !
Comment expliques-tu le succès de cette formation a capella, pourtant complètement à contre courant à l’époque?
Par le contraste avec ce qui se faisait à l’époque, avec beaucoup de synthés par exemple. Le public a apprécié ce retour à la simplicité et à l’authenticité des voix.
Il y avait très peu de groupes vocaux, et ceux qui existaient comme Indigo (qui existe toujours d’ailleurs !) étaient assez clairement typés, soit jazzy, soit bossa, soit gospel, … Notre façon de chanter a cappella, plus variété/pop, était plus accessible à tous, ne semblait pas réservée à un public déjà averti, amateur d’un style musical particulier.
Et puis, Pow woW a décidé de faire de la musique Pop : pourquoi avoir choisi de laisser de côté le chant a capella alors que ça marchait si fort ?
Il n’y a pas eu une telle rupture. Dès le départ, les instruments étaient présents, les guitares notamment. Ils ont pris un peu plus d’importance dans le troisième album, surtout à travers le choix de L’Oasis comme single, mais il y avait encore des chansons a cappella, comme Dis-le moi en face, par exemple.
C’était une transition progressive, parce que la musique n’est pas l’immobilité. A quoi bon refaire la même chose dans chaque nouvel album ? Tout l’intérêt est dans l’exploration de nouveaux univers musicaux. En ce sens, le troisième album était une ouverture sur plusieurs suites possibles.
Quand vous vous êtes séparés, était-ce une pause ou une rupture ? N’était-ce pas difficile de commencer une carrière solo ? D’un coup, on doit se poser des tas de questions, non ? Comment as-tu vécu cette période de transition ?
C’était une pause indispensable. Nous étions tous fatigués, pas de la musique, mais de tout ce qui allait avec. De 1990 à 1997, nous avons pratiquement été ensemble jour après jour. Chacun de nous aspirait à une pause pour pouvoir se retrouver, retrouver sa famille. Et il y avait aussi des désaccords sur les choix musicaux. Bien sûr commencer une carrière solo est un peu difficile, c’est l’exploration d’une voie nouvelle, une prise de risque mais c’est aussi aller de l’avant, faire ce qu’on a porté en soi depuis longtemps sans forcément avoir l’occasion de l’exprimer complètement.
La période de transition a surtout été l’occasion de vivre ce que je n’avais pas pu vivre pendant les années précédentes : me poser auprès des miens, voyager, fonder une famille.
J’ai lu que tu avais écrit pour les autres ? On peut avoir quelques noms ?
J’ai écrit pour Petru Guelfucci, pour Sheraz ...
Tu ne t’es pas arrêté de chanter, j’imagine. Qu’as-tu fait de ces années ?
Comme je l’ai dit, j’ai voyagé, puis je me suis posé. J’ai composé pour moi aussi bien sûr et ce sont ces chansons-là que je propose maintenant. Je les ai testées dans quelques émissions de télé et sur de petites scènes, en Normandie notamment. Et le public a semblé les apprécier !...Et puis avec Alain et Ahmed, nous ne nous sommes jamais perdus de vue, nous avons souvent chanté ensemble lors de concerts des uns ou des autres. Alain et moi avons aussi participé à l’album solo qu’Ahmed a sorti en 2003. Ensuite j’ai rencontré David Mignonneau avec qui j’ai aussi partagé quelques scènes avant qu’il ne nous rejoigne dans la nouvelle composition de Pow woW.
Tu es un grand fan des Beatles, et plus particulièrement de Paul McCartney. En quoi t-ont –ils influencé ?
McCartney, et les Beatles collectivement, m’ont influencé par l’importance qu’ils ont accordée à la mélodie, et aux chœurs. Et aussi par la façon dont ils ont su évoluer entre leurs débuts et la fin de leur carrière, la façon dont ils ont pris des risques. Quel chemin parcouru entre les premières chansons purement rock and roll et la richesse mélodique de certaines chansons du double blanc !
En 2005, Pow Wow s’est reformé, et si certains fans ont répondu présent, j’ai lu à l’époque (sur le forum de Pow Wow) que pas mal de dates ont été annulées, à mon grand désespoir d’ailleurs, car j’espérais votre passage en Auvergne. Qui a eu l’idée de cette reformation ?
Non, en fait très peu de dates ont été annulées, moins d’une demi-douzaine, et surtout pour des causes indépendantes de notre volonté. Certaines parce la première reprise en Corée des Dix Commandements (où Ahmed tient le rôle de Ramsès II) a été décalée de trois mois par rapport aux prévisions initiales d’où une incompatibilité avec certaines dates de Pow woW. D’autres ont été reportées, comme Concarneau, Avignon ou Pertuis, la dernière par exemple quand je me suis cassé une jambe !
Et nous sommes bien passés en Auvergne, encore très récemment, fin novembre, à Lempdes près de Clermont-Ferrand !...
Pour l’idée de la reformation, c’était Ahmed, Alain et moi, et aussi Bertrand, donc tous, en fait ! Et puis finalement, les projets de Bertrand ne lui ont pas permis de nous accompagner, et David nous a rejoints.
Sorti en juin 2007, ton album « Une autre vie » évoque l’amour, la paternité, la sérénité. Qu’est-ce qu’elle a de différent cette vie-là ? Aurais-tu trouvé ton bonheur ?
Cette vie-là est sans doute plus complète, plus équilibrée, plus calme que celle que j’ai connue pendant la première période de Pow woW. Le bonheur, je crois qu’on ne le trouve jamais. On vit une succession d’instants de bonheur, plus ou moins nombreux, plus ou moins rapprochés. Mon frère Marc dit « Le bonheur est une chandelle : c’est quand elle s’éteint qu’on s’aperçoit qu’elle éclairait ». Mais le bonheur continu n’existe sans doute pas, et en fait heureusement, parce qu’alors tout s’arrêterait. La vie c’est le mouvement, c’est avancer, chercher toujours.
Avec la maturité, on apprend à reconnaître et à apprécier chaque instant de bonheur. Qui a dit aussi : « C’est ce que je trouve qui m’apprend ce que je cherchais » ?
Est-ce qu’il y a une tournée prévue avec cet album solo ?
Oui, des dates ne vont pas tarder à arriver.
N’est-ce pas difficile de concilier le groupe et ta carrière solo ?
Pour l’instant, non, parce que le groupe a mis provisoirement ses activités entre parenthèses, justement pour permettre à chacun de mener des activités en solo.
Après avoir vécu les hauts et les bas de la vie d’artiste, qu’attends-tu de l’avenir ?
Un peu de sérénité.
