Tomislav Interview
-Le français est râleur par définition. Où puises-tu cette insouciance et cette bonne humeur ? Ça fait tellement de bien ! Merci ! Je prends beaucoup de plaisir à jouer et chanter, en fait. Un truc qui fait autant de bien à la tête qu’au corps. Interpréter une chanson offre un espace où je peux vraiment m’assumer : qualités, défauts, esprit tordu… Tout ! C’est une chose précieuse, car la vie quotidienne ne le permet pas forcément. Mais attention, je suis capable d’être très français, moi aussi, tu peux demander à Chrystèle, ma manageuse ! On est si râleur que ça, en France ? -Crois-tu qu’on puisse faire entendre sa voix, faire passer des messages profonds en douceur ? C’est ce que tu fais en tout cas. Eh bien, ça me touche beaucoup, ce que tu dis là. Je ne sais pas trop… J’aime ce qui est léger en façade et plus grave à l’intérieur. Pour moi, dans une chanson, c’est le contraste entre les deux qui donne de la force au propos. Il y a une chanson de Tom Waits qui s’intitule « Soldier’s Things » : sur une mélodie magnifique et très douce, il utilise de manière subtile des mots très simples pour parler de la mort d’un soldat. Et au final, ce qui en ressort, c’est une grande tristesse et une violence contenue. C’est une chanson incroyable. Cela dit, bien conscient de n’être qu’un embryon de bébé-fourmi à côté de lui, je n’entends pas me comparer pas à Tom Waits… -D’où vient ce dessin de petit bonhomme censé te représenter ? D’une adoration pour Bob Dylan et son harmonica ? Non, c’est juste moi quand j’étais petit ! En fait, quand j’ai commencé les concerts, je faisais des tracts à distribuer un peu partout. Au bout d’un certain temps, je savais plus trop quoi mettre dessus : il me semblait qu’aucune photo de moi ne faisait l’affaire. Et puis ce petit bonhomme a fait son apparition. Et je crois bien qu’il est déterminé à rester. Il tient ma gratte et mon harmonica, un peu à la manière de Dylan, effectivement. -Qui sont tes idoles ou tes modèles, si tu n’aimes pas le mot idole ? J’ai beaucoup écouté, et j’écoute toujours Springsteen, Waits, Dylan… Pour moi, ce sont de grands conteurs d’histoires. C’est toujours ce qui m’a beaucoup touché dans les chansons : un type ou une nana te raconte quelque chose et tu as l’impression qu’on s’adresse directement à toi. John Fante, un écrivain italo-américain, me fait le même effet. Sinon, j’ai énormément écouté Hendrix et des bluesmen comme Son House, Skip James… Et puis les chants polyphoniques de Croatie, mon pays d’origine : ça, je ne pouvais pas y couper, mes parents en écoutaient tout le temps. -Pourquoi avoir écrit une chanson sur James Dean ? C’est avant tout une chanson sur le temps qui passe et les illusions perdues. Mince, ce n’est pas un peu prétentieux de dire ça ? Tant pis… L’image de James Dean est un symbole intéressant car il représente une sorte de jeunesse pleine de fougue, un moment de la vie où tout est possible. Sa mort prématurée fige cette représentation dans le temps, d’une certaine manière. Un peu comme si, en prenant de l’âge, tout ce qu’on avait souhaité être faisait partie du passé, tout en restant bien présent, quelque part. Heu… C’est pas un peu confus, tout ça ? -L’humour serait-elle ta meilleure arme ou ton meilleur atout ? Tout dépend des jours… J’aurais tendance à dire que si je lance une vanne sur scène et qu’elle fait un bide retentissant, alors c’est une arme redoutable qui se retourne contre moi ! -Qu’est-ce qui te plait dans la musique acoustique ? Une guitare et une voix, c’est la base de bien des chansons. C’est vraiment l’essence du truc, et ça me plaît beaucoup. Et puis j’aime la chaleur du son d’une guitare acoustique, ses basses. C’est un instrument qui a autant de pertinence sur scène que dans une chambre. Mais j’ai aussi joué de la guitare électrique. -Tu as fait parti d’un groupe avant de faire route tout seul avec ta guitare. Parle-nous en peu de Keebab. Eh bien, justement, Keebab était un trio funk-rock au sein duquel je chantais et jouais de la guitare électrique. Avec deux musiciens fabuleux : Loukouman AMIDOU, fantastique bassiste, qui mène aujourd’hui un projet de musique électronique baptisé Krapulax, et Mehdi Messaoudi, un batteur incroyable qui joue maintenant avec Victimas De La Suerte et Carbonnell. Ce fut une belle aventure qui a duré cinq ans. -Cette question, je la pose à beaucoup de jeunes talents découverts sur la toile : après le 6 titres, on attend l’album ! L’enregistrement est en cours d’après mes sources…Peux-tu nous en dire plus ? Tes sources sont fiables, Miss… J’enregistre en ce moment mon premier album au studio LO² à Montreuil, en Seine Saint Denis. C’est Rémy NITUSGAU, le réalisateur de l’album de Fancy, qui est aux manettes. J’avais beaucoup d’appréhensions car c’est mon tout premier. Ah… Les premières fois… Et puis finalement, le travail avance tranquillement, et Rémy n’y est pas pour rien. Je pense le sortir l’année prochaine. -Ta plus belle rencontre dans le monde de la musique ? Il y en a eu beaucoup ! Mozart, Hendrix, Dorothée… Ok, j’arrête. Mais il y en a quand même eu quelques-unes, comme Chrystèle, ma manageuse, qui fait un travail de fourmi pour faire avancer mon projet et qui m’a appris à VRAIMENT travailler. Il y a eu Juan Rozoff, aussi. J'ai eu l'occasion de travailler avec lui car j'ai été sélectionné pour un dispositif d'accompagnement de jeunes artistes, et il faisait partie des formateurs pour les prestations scéniques. Et franchement, pour moi, ça a été une consécration! J'écoutais sa musique depuis si longtemps... Clairement, dans mon parcours, il y a un « avant » et un « après » ma rencontre avec Juan Rozoff. Plus récemment, il y a eu Le Petit Dernier et Idir, dont j’ai fait la première partie. -Est-ce un choix de jouer les hommes orchestres tout seul sur scène ? Au départ, j’ai fait ça à défaut d’avoir un groupe. Sur scène, je voulais des couleurs différentes pour les chansons, alors je me suis mis à jouer de tous les instruments que je pouvais trouver chez moi. Et puis c’est devenu un plaisir, une chose dans laquelle je me retrouve bien : je ne sais pas faire une seule chose correctement, alors j’en fais plusieurs approximativement. L’un dans l’autre, ça fonctionne à peu près… -ça ne te manque pas de te retrouver en groupe ? Si, quand vient le moment de présenter les musiciens, pendant un concert. Ou quand j’entends dire que le chanteur se la raconte, ou que le batteur n’est pas dans le rythme… Sinon, ça va, il n’y a trop de conflits, pas de chance qu’on se sépare et c’est moi qui décide ! -Ouah, tu as fait la première partie de Boney M ? C’était comment ? Tu as aimé danser sur « Daddy cool » en live ? Raconte !!!! T’as vu, hein ? La classe ! C’était l’été dernier, à la Grande Motte. Bon, Bobby Farrell a pris un coup de vieux, c’est bien normal, mais il a toujours la pêche. « Daddy Cool », « Rasputin », ça nous a bien remués… -Blague à part, peux-tu nous raconter ta rencontre avec Idir dont tu as fait la première partie aussi ? J’étais programmé en première partie, je suis allé le voir, me suis présenté et il m’a accueilli tout simplement et chaleureusement. Il m’a même demandé de faire un rappel à la fin de mon set ! Je suis vraiment ravi de l’avoir rencontré. Son concert était poignant : il joue dans une salle et tu as l’impression d’être tantôt dans ta chambre, à écouter les histoires qu’il te raconte, tantôt dans une soirée où il te fait bouger sans répit. -Tu as bénéficié d’un coaching scénique : qu’as-tu appris par exemple ? A sourire aux filles du premier rang pour les faire crier ? Et à esquiver les jets d’œufs pourris. Tout un art, ça… En fait, un coaching scénique, c’est un travail qui vise à trouver une façon de servir tes chansons sur scène le mieux possible. Où je me rends compte de l’immense travail qu’il me reste encore à accomplir… Et ça me va bien, ce travail-là ! -Ton humour et ta bonne humeur sont contagieux cher Tomislav !
